Apocryphal Prompt

Is there a particular fairy tale stereotype you think could use a revision?

Or perhaps a mythical -ism that could do with a more contemporary perspective or retelling?

Write a poem that retells a fairy tale or myth in which a two-dimensional stereotyped character is fleshed out or rebels against their typecast.

Alternatively, write about a archetype you’ve encountered in real life.

Consider how the world of today would react to such a retelling.

    WICKED STEPMOTHER

    Everyone has, or

    maybe should have,

    in their own life

    a wicked stepmother,

    someone who

    goes to great lengths

    to make miserable

    those around her,

    or sometimes even

    just one person,

    one target for

    whatever reason of her own

    to criticize

    and grind down.

    This was my mother

    targeting me.

    I could do no right,

    my efforts never

    enough for her.

    Simply walking,

    shutting my lips,

    even sleeping

    I did “wrong.”

    Only as she died

    did she show she cared.

    Then, I saw her pain

    and I could cry.
